ECHS golf families,
Thanks to all who attended the meeting on Monday. It was good to meet you all. For those that did not make the informational meeting I have attached the information that we presented.
In addition to those that attended the meeting we have had another 5 students express an interest in playing golf. We have room for 12 students in the program and hence we may need to run tryouts on Feb 18, 19 and 20. Acceptance into the program will be based on the following:
1) A student's ability to commit to the program
2) Ability (for new golfers how well they progress over the three day tryout period)
3) Grades
For those of you that have not played golf before. I do expect that many of you will be able to play but I would highly suggest that you consider borrowing clubs for tryouts. I would not want you to spend a large sum of money on clubs and then not make the team. If anybody is having trouble borrowing clubs then please let me know and we will work something out.
Attendance at matches for non match players: The following question was raised in the meeting on Monday: "can players not playing in a match come support a match"?. The answer to this is yes for home games and no for away games. Also, for home matches students not on the roster will not be given early release so would need to make their own way to the course if they want to support the team.
Equipment needed to play: To play golf you will need to have golf shoes and clubs (at least half a set). As I mentioned above, If you are a new player I would highly suggest you borrow clubs for the first week. If you are buying clubs for the first time I would recommend you take a look at craig's list. If you need golf shoes you can buy them at dicks sporting, big 5 or there is a Golf Mart in Escondido. They can be spiked or spikeless just no metal spikes (not sure you can buy metal spikes anymore!). The most important thing with shoes is that they are comfortable. You will be doing a lot of walking in them. The only other item you might want to consider buying is a glove.
Match schedule: Coach Embrey has already secured another 4 matches for the schedule so we are up to 16 matches for the season.
Bringing clubs to school and storing clubs at school: We will have access to an secure room in the main school office building. Students will be able to drop their clubs off in the morning and / or drop them after matches and practice.
If anybody has any questions or issues please do not hesitate to let me know.
Thanks,
Coach Bentley
