We had a great turnout for tryouts on Saturday morning. We have enough players to have a JV team for the first time in about 10 years. The talent is amazing and like I told the girls on Saturday it is the most talent we have had at Charter since I became involved with the softball program in 2013. We had a great freshmen class last season and this season’s freshmen class looks every bit as good.
I will plan to send out a weekly email (usually on Sundays), to keep everyone up to date with the schedule and everything else going on with the softball program. I created a Team Snap account for the team yesterday. I included one parent email for each player. Please add other family members and phone numbers so we can communicate if needed. I will put the schedule on there as well. I am going to just use one Team Snap account for both varsity and JV, so both schedules will be in one place. For right now, I have only entered the schedule for this week, but I will add the full schedules soon.
For this week we will practice Monday through Friday. Since Monday is an early release, we will practice on Mondays from 3:30 to 5:15. Tuesday through Friday practices will be 4:15 to dark (about 5:30). After the time change in March, we will practice 4:30 to 6:00. This Saturday morning we are scrimmaging San Pasqual at their field. The JV game will be first at 9:00, followed by the varsity game expected to start around 11:00. San Pasqual has been a Division I team the last few years, but our games against them have been close the last two years.
By Wednesday night the coaches will determine which players are going to be playing on JV and varsity. Since we don’t have enough players to have two completely separate teams, some players will need to play on both JV and varsity. We plan to hand out the uniforms on Thursday. Girls need to plan on getting their own socks. They will need white, maroon and black socks. Although the school provides pants, none of the girls like the ones the school provides, so plan on needing white, black and grey pants. This is year 3 for the varsity uniforms, and the school plans to replace uniforms after 3 years. Next year we should have new uniforms (and better pants).
We need to do some fund raising this season. Last year the parents organized the snack bar and that seemed to work well. If a parent would like to take charge of that, I would appreciate it. We are considering offering a clinic during spring break for EGSL players. We could host 15-20 girls for 2 or 3 days and raise some money that way. Other fund raising ideas any parents have, just let me know.
For this email group, I took last year’s email group and added at least one parent for each freshman. If there are any other family members you would like me to add to this email group, let me know and I will add them.
Any questions feel free to contact me.
