ECHS Football,
Escondido Charter High School Football 2020 (yes 2020 extending into 2021) season has been a joy to watch this year. I am so proud of you and so proud to be your coach! You are a team who truly loves one other… and you are a team that looks for ways to bring a brighter day to those needing it in their darkest hour.
Some may want to define success of a season on an overall record or a championship. The Tiger football program will always find their definition of success of a season in its growth as a team in the areas of hard work, living pure, leading with courage and honoring their team. As John Wooden said so profoundly, “Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.” I am so proud that you are learning the true definition of success and learning what it truly means to be a Man and to “Play as One!”
This weeks John Wooden focus is “Competitive Greatness”
John Wooden shared this poem at one of his last speaking engagements before he past away. He defined Success as: “Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.”
This poem speaks on the this same topic so well.
The Road Ahead, The Road Behind
By George Moriarty
(Former MLB Umpire)
Sometimes I think the fates must grin as we denounce them and insist,
The only reason we can not win is the fates themselves have missed.
Yet, there lives on the ancient claim – we win or lose within ourselves,
The shining trophies on our shelves can never win tomorrow’s game.
So you and I know deeper down there is a chance to win the crown,
But when we fail to give our best, we simply haven’t met the test
Of giving all and saving none until the game is really won.
Of showing what is meant by grit, of fighting on when others quit,
Of playing through not letting up, it’s bearing down that wins the cup.
Of taking it and taking more until we gain the winning score,
Of dreaming there’s a goal ahead, of hoping when our dreams are dead,
Of praying when our hopes have fled. Yet, losing, not afraid to fall,
If bravely we have given all, for who can ask more of a man
than giving all, it seems to me, is not so far from – Victory.
And so the fates are seldom wrong, no matter how they twist and wind,
It’s you and I who make our fates, we open up or close the gates,
On the Road Ahead or the Road Behind.
