We had our first varsity game last Thursday and beat Classical Academy by the mercy rule 10-0 in 5 innings. In her first varsity start, Lilly Harper had a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts. We had to cancel the JV game that was scheduled for Friday because we did not have enough eligible players.
This week will be more challenging as the varsity takes part in the prestigious Cougar Classic tournament and JV plays a very good Pt. Loma team.
The schedule for this week is as follows:
Monday: Varsity game vs. Our Lady of Peace at 3:00pm at Kit Carson Park. We are only taking 10 varsity players to this game in order to keep all the other players available for the JV game on Tuesday. The early release on Monday for those 10 players is 1:30, and the van will leave the school at 1:40. All remaining players who do not go to the varsity game on Monday will go to regular practice from 3:30 to 5:00.
Tuesday: Any player who did not play in the varsity game on Monday will go to the JV game vs. Pt. Loma. This game is a 6:00pm start at the Correia Middle School Sports Complex. (2346 Famosa Blvd. San Diego 92107.) Any player who needs a ride should let Coach K. know by Monday. The van will leave no later than 4:15 on Tuesday with warmups to start at 5:00. All varsity players who played in the varsity game on Monday are not eligible to play in that JV game and will have practice from 4:15 to 5:15. We will only practice 1 hour to allow time for Coach Shane and myself to get to Pt. Loma to watch the JV game.
Wednesday: Varsity game at Kit Carson at 7:00pm vs. Mission Bay. All players with a varsity uniform should be at the field ready to warm up by 6:00. Players will need to arrange their own transportation. JV players will practice at the Charter field from 4:15 to 5:30.
Thursday: Regular practice for all players from 4:15 until dark.
Friday: Varsity game at Kit Carson at 7:00pm vs. Rancho Buena Vista. All players with a varsity uniform should be at the field ready to warm up by 6:00. Players will need to arrange their own transportation. JV players will have the day off.
Saturday: Bracket play for the Cougar Classic. We won’t know what time we play until after our game on Friday night, when all 40 teams are seeded.
A special thanks to Will Smith, John Harper and J Jones for cleaning up the Charter field. The field looked great for our opening game.
The school held a welcome to high school night last week for all 8th graders who will be attending Charter High School next year. We had a table set up for softball and 16 girls indicated an interest in playing softball next season. With another large group of incoming freshmen next year, the softball program will be stronger than ever and we should have more than enough players to field complete varsity and JV teams. I’m sure the competition will be great and the JV team will be better than a lot of varsity teams.
If anyone has any questions about the schedule. Please feel free to reach out to me.
