Yes, it’s very early in the prep basketball season but no local team is faring as well as the Es-condido Charter hoopsters.
After a season-opening loss to Mira Mesa, the White Tigers have found some real traction having won four of their last five outings. Giving even more validation to their recent run is that all of their victories have come on the road. In fact, Esco Charter has yet to play a home game.
Since falling to the aforemen-tioned Marauders, the White Tigers have bested Fallbrook (54-51), West Hills (82-58), El Capitan (58-50) and nearby neighbor San Pasqual (67-52). Only a close 46-40 setback to Del Lago Academy disrupted EC’s recent surge.
Thus far, the key for Coach David Vidosic’s crew has been that several players are factor-ing heavily into the equation.
Expected to be a go-to guy coming into the season, junior guard Max Mowrey has clear-ly delivered; while averaging 15.8 points and nearly seven rebounds per contest.
Another dependable upper-classman has been the 6’1” Joe Scates, who gets his share of points (8.4) while also making an impact in the rebounding (7.2) and steal (2.8) departments.
Then there’s the impressive work of 6-foot-5 freshman Ale-jandro Gonzalez. Not only is this center/forward scoring in double figures (10.6) but he’s also pulling down boards at a clip of 8.8 per game.
However, don’t think that Gonzalez is the only frosh creating some waves. Boldyn Rimmer is a 5’10” shooting guard who can find the basket and generate offense as his 9.6 scoring average attests.
Perhaps EC’s most recent tri-umph over San Pasqual high-lights the team’s knack for getting contributions from mul-tiple sources. In a decisive win that earned for the White Tigers some local bragging rights, Mowrey, Gonzalez and Scates all tallied 12 points. Moreover, Gonzalez was a beast on the boards while snaring 14 caroms.
Yet, there were even more players of note as seniors Alex Adams (10 points) and Ashton Pincock (nine rebounds) also played significant roles that demonstrated the depth that EC can showcase.
If the White Tigers can keep getting that kind of production from across the board, a special season could be in the offing. EC will look to extend its promising roll with three more scheduled games this week ver-sus Mission Vista, local foe Or-ange Glen and Southwest SD.
